He was enrolled in the Teacher's Institute held at Ord, Nebraska, inJun e 1900. ‎(Teacher's Institutes were held in various communities inNebras ka, usually in early summer, for the purpose of trainingindividuals wh o wished to teach in small rural schools.)‎ In 1940-46 heserved as Justice of the Peace of Jackson Township in Boon e County,Arkansas. His birthdate was incorrectly reported as 1885 on his deathcertificate. York County, NE, Marriage Book E, p. 686 ‎(included hisparents' names)‎ His name appeared in the Fremont ‎(Nebraska)‎ CityDirectory in 1896-97, li sted as a student at the Normal School‎[teachers' college]‎. Between 1915 and 1920 he bought and sold landseveral times in Bonnevill e County, Idaho. In 1918 "William JohnCOLEMAN," born "18 Sep 1873," registered for the Wo rld War I civiliandraft in Bonneville County, Idaho. He was frequently mentioned in _TheOrd ‎[Nebraska]‎ Weekly Journal_ newspa per in 1900. The last contact hehad with his mother in Nebraska was a letter from Col orado, signed "W.J. TUMA," dated 2 November 1904, at which time he wrot e that she shouldexpect another letter, along with a photo of her grandd aughter Elsie,in about two weeks. His relatives in Nebraska had ‎(unconfirmed)‎ reportsthat he had been kill ed by a fall while he was repairing the roof ofhis residence in Colorad o Springs in 1904 or 1905. It was apparentlybelieved by his sister an d mother that his wife and child‎(ren)‎ werereturning to Nebraska, but i n spite of searching for them, they stillhad located no trace of them b y 1925. Following the death of William'smother, in a letter dated 25 June 1925 t o the County Judge at Burwell,Nebraska, Inez's brother David S. PARKHURS T wrote: "Dear Sir; I do notknow where Will Tuma Coleman is. The las t I heard of him he was atHazard, Nebraska, with his wife and little gir l. His wife was mysister and he is my brother-in-law. Yours Truly, D. S . Parkhurst,Minatare, Nebraska, R.R. #2." ‎(Note that relatives were awa re that thesurname had been changed from TUMA to COLEMAN.)‎ Records of FremontCollege ‎(now Midlands Lutheran College)‎ show that Wil l "TUME" was astudent in the 1890's. On 20 Sep 1900 _The Ord ‎[NE]‎ Journal_ reportedthat he and wife "left ‎[1 7 September]‎ Monday morning for Chelan,Washington, at which place he ha s secured a school for the winter. Mr.TUMA has a brother-in-law residin g there and if he likes the countrywill probably remain a while." _Th e Ord ‎[NE]‎ Journal_ of 23 August1900 reported that his teaching job in W ashington state would pay $45per month. On 24 September 1895 "John TUMA, Jr., returned to school inFremont," Neb raska, according to the 27 September issue of _The Dodge‎[NE]‎ Criterion_ . _The Dodge ‎[NE]‎ Criterion_ reported on 23 April 1897,"Will TUMA went t o Fremont Wednesday ‎[21 April]‎ to attend the NormalSchool there. His sis ter will also attend after the first of nextmonth." The Colorado Springs ‎[CO]‎ City Directory of 1907-1908 reportedthat Wm. J . TUMA had moved to Denver. His name does not appear as TUMAor COLEMA N in any Denver City Directory between 1906 and 1910.According to the _Geneva ‎[NE]‎ Gazette_, p. 1, "Storklings," dated 17 Dec 1908, "To William J. COLEMAN and wife of Geneva on Friday, Dec 11th ,a son." ‎[They actually had a daughter.]‎ The earliest known referenceto the COLEMAN surname was found in an ad th at began appearing weeklyin the _Geneva ‎[Nebraska]‎ Gazette_ on 6 Februar y 1908: "Wm. J. COLEMAN- Contractor and Builder - Am prepared to do al l kinds of work in theline. - Plans and Estimates cheerfully - Furnishe d on Application -Geneva, Nebraska." William and sister Emma TUMA were listed in _The OrdJournal_ newspaper o n 10 September 1897 among the Valley County,Nebraska, school teachers . The home address for both was at Elyria.Emma was listed as teachin g in Garfield County.
